In the past, the Korean scientific community avoided working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer a viable option.

What is Evolution?
Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which could result in changes to genes or even whole genomes. Over the course of many generations the changes could result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how individuals who have advantages survive and reproduce more than those with less favorable traits. Over time, this differential reproduction may lead to the emergence of completely new species.
The word "evolution" comes from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has a myriad of meanings over the years as it has taken form in the sciences and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process by which living organisms develop traits to increase their chances of surviving or producing offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Such a change in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can't be considered evolution because they don't pass on to the next generation.
Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial, despite the fact that it has been proven to be valid by a multitude of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. What is Creationism?
Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything within it. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. While some creationists are not Christian however, many are. Creationists are usually divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The YECs are perhaps the most well known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the world in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is true, and that the universe and life on Earth began only recently.
OECs may be less popular However, their beliefs are just as passionate as the YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a myth.
Both forms of creationism deny that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origins of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought shunned miracles in fear that they could lose their credibility.

However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.
What is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of the concept of creationism, many of them think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. The publishers of high-school textbooks announced recently that they would eliminate references to evolution from their books. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has won its first victory by taking away instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. The next step is to remove the finch-research of Darwin's famed as well as on human evolution.
STR claims that it has the backing of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints a negative view for students. On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on creation science in major seminaries. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
